La largeur du Bosphore varie de 500 à 3000 mètres et sa profondeur de 50 à 120 mètres. Chaque année, environ 45.000 navires le franchissent . C'est grâce à ce bras de mer qui la sépare de l'Europe de l'Asie, qu'Istanbul acquit son statut de métropole. Selon la mythologie grecque, c'est à cet endroit que Lo, maîtresse de Zeus, se précipita dans les flots pour se débarrasser d'un taon lancé sur elle par Héra. Le lieu tient son nom de cette légende car en grec Bosphore signifie "Gué des Vaches". Souvent incendiées, il ne reste qu'une trentaine d'authentiques maisons. La construction des trois grosses tours et des murailles ne dura que quatre mois. Après la prise de Constantinople, elle perdit de son importance et servit de prison un temps.
